The esports scene is getting more and more popular, and professional gamers become true legends. The career of a cyberathlete who takes part in the world’s greatest esports tournaments is the career path that many young people around the world aspire to. No wonder, the cybersports field is also a topic of many films and series. Here is our list of the most fascinating films about esports and gamers. Some of them are phantastic, others are documentaries, but all of them are definitely worth watching.

“EXISTENZ” (1999)

This science-fiction horror film by David Cronenberg is a true masterpiece. The film tells the story of the game designer, Allegra Geller and her game “EXistenZ”, that links the player to a virtual world via a “pod” inserted into the latter’s back and, thus, the central nervous system.  During the presentation of the game, Allegra is assassinated by a fanatic, and Allegra and her trainee escape. However, later it turns out that her pod is damaged and they both need to play “EXistenZ”. A peculiarity of the game is that it is difficult for the participants to determine whether they are playing a game or living real life. Towards the end, the adventure becomes so confusing that it becomes particularly difficult to determine where the players are. And the film reflects the confrontation between reality and virtuality.

“GAMER” (2009)

This movie is about a mind-controlling game, which the main character needs to play to be set free.

The action of the film takes place in a near utopian future where a programmer has created a reality video game that is played by murderers and other criminals. John Tillman, sentenced to life imprisonment for an offense he did not commit, must take part in this game in order to gain his release. 

Every week, millions of people around the world follow him and hundreds of other death row inmates online as they engage in the battles of fun. Tillman fights to gain his freedom, reclaim his identity, and overthrow the system that imprisoned him.

“PIXELS” (2015)

First, this movie is interesting because it was directed by Chris Columbus, the director of the famous “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone”. Secondly, this movie is a must-see for anyone who feels nostalgic about old computer games. This comedy film tells us about the invasion of Earth by aliens. The main characters of the film every day went to the club with slot machines. One of them wins in a famous tournament one day, and the main prize is sending a recording of the game on a NASA probe into space, and the aliens see this message as a declaration of war. The alien invaders are similar to the characters of popular games of the 80’s The characters in the movie are forced to fight the invaders. This comedy film is unique in that it has many motifs related to old video games.

“READY PLAYER ONE” (2018)

This is a dystopia set in the year 2045.Around the world, the game “Oasis” is a virtual world where everyone can create their own avatar. The main character, an eighteen-year-old guy is a successful esports player and makes his own team. The team will have to face many obstacles, pass a lot of tests and solve riddles from the creator of the game. And they have opponents who want to kill them. This is an interesting and dynamic dystopia with sci-fi elements. 

“FRAG” (2008)

A must-see film for all the esports fans! This is one of the first documentaries about cybersports. The film looks at the phenomenon of cybersports, where it all started, where all the different leagues came from, and where all that prize money comes from. The film also talks about some very famous players, such as Fatal1ty, who became the most successful pro-gamer in the world. Some of the most iconic figures in eSports, such as Slasher and Carmac, also appear in the film. The film is interesting because it shows the real life of famous progamers with all problems and difficulties.
